A 3-9×40 is still the scope more deer get killed with than anything else on the market — the magnification range covers most shots hunters actually take, and a clean duplex-style reticle gets out of the way when it counts. Where hunters go wrong is buying glass at the bottom of their budget; you spend more time looking through a scope than any other piece of gear on the rifle.
