Leopard hunting is done over bait. Usually bait will be a baboon or plains game animals from one of the previous hunts. Proper pre-baiting will be done before you even arrive in camp. The ideal situation is for you to arrive and already have the baits being hit. Trail cams are used to identify trophy leopards that are hitting the bait.

This hunt is not for the faint-of-heart. It is a specialized hunt and you will have to stay very focused. Leopard hunts take place out of a blind over bait at night. If you are very lucky, they will come in during light at dawn or at dusk, but don’t count on it. Be prepared for long, motionless hours in the blind. You will hear every sound and movement from outside the blind as you sit and wait for the distinctive, “throaty coughing” calling sound or, better yet, the sound of him eating at the bait. They make the blinds as comfortable as possible because of the long hours being spent there. Once you hear the sound of of something on the bait, and every sense goes to High Alert! At that point, you wait anxiously for the PH to switch on the light. You will have one shot, and one shot only. Make it count. During the days, you check baits, move blinds and maybe even hunt for more bait.
