Kansas Archery Whitetail Hunt Report
Craig runs a great outfitter business. He is very knowledgeable of whitetail deer behavior and he specializes in hunting them. He invested a lot of work scouting his leased land, hanging many tree stands, and studying multiple trail cameras from spring to fall. He is a dedicated bowhunter, as am I, and he appreciates the hunting experience as much as taking a trophy animal which is consistent with the beliefs of most archers. Craig did a great job guiding us and making sure our experience was memorable. The weather didn’t cooperate on this trip and was unseasonably warm which kept the deer from moving very much. But he did the best he could given the weather situation. Despite the challenging conditions, I was successful in taking home a great trophy buck as my first ever whitetail harvest. I would definitely recommend this outfitter to anyone looking to have a great Kansas whitetail hunting experience.
The planning for my first whitetail bow hunt started in the spring of 2013 when my father-in-law told my about a hunt he had recently booked. This prompted my interest and a short time later I booked the hunt. I had never done a fully guided hunt and I was looking forward to building good hunting memories with my father-in-law.
We arrived in Kansas in early November to unseasonably warm temperatures with high’s in the 60’s and lows in the mid-40’s. As any whitetail hunter knows, these temperatures do not make for great rutting activity during the day and the first few days proved this to be true. We saw very little deer movement but we did see a few nice bucks outside of bow range. The second to last night of hunting, a cold front moved in and deer started moving 30 minutes before dark. I was fortunate to arrow a 160 class buck just before dark. He is my first whitetail ever taken and is much more than I could have ever dreamed of taking on my first trip to Kansas. A bonus was that I shot a coyote the morning of the same day I harvested my buck. It was one of my most memorable days of hunting given that I harvested two very tough to hunt species in the same day with a bow.
Craig is a hard working, salt of the earth type of guy and one heck of a guide. He worked hard for us under difficult hunting conditions. He is very personable and I feel like I gained a new hunting friend. There were a total of three hunters on this trip and my buck was the only deer taken. However, we all booked with Craig again in 2015 and that should be a direct reflection of the quality of the outfitter/hunt.
