Utah Conservation Permit Program

Few states offer the variety of big game hunting that Utah does — elk, mule deer, moose, pronghorn, bear, cougar, desert bighorn sheep, Rocky Mountain bighorn, bison, Rocky Mountain goats, and, animals many of us consider big game, wild turkeys. And, few states engage in wildlife and habitat management as intensely as that state does.

Bison are one of the species benefiting from re-stocking with funds raised through Utah’s Conservation Permit Program.

At least some of that progressive management is funded through a program that not only benefits the habitat and wildlife, but also hunters and conservation organizations. The Utah Conservation Permit Program provides hunting permits to conservation organizations to be auctioned at banquets and other fundraisers. According to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, since 1981, these permits have raised more than $25 million. More than 90 percent of that revenue has gone toward projects that directly benefit the species for which the permit was issued.

Among the projects funded by the permits are habitat enhancement and restoration, species transplants, radio telemetry studies, research projects, aerial surveys, and education, according to the Utah DWR.

For 2012, the Utah Wildlife Board approved 324 conservation permits, 229 of which were for limited-entry or once-in-a-lifetime big game hunting. The permits were awarded to the following organizations:

  • Ducks Unlimited
  • Foundation for North American Wild Sheep
  • Mule Deer Foundation
  • National Wild Turkey Federation
  • Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation
  • Safari Club International
  • Sportsmen for Fish & Wildlife
  • Utah Bowmen for Habitat
