Biological and Other Compelling Needs for Antler Restriction

Quality Deer Management

by Dick Henry Many critics of antler restriction are quick to dismiss the program as a gimmick or another “flavor of the month” for deer management. However this notion ignores the basic breeding ecology of deer and the impacts that can affect a white-tailed deer herd when that ecology is compromised. Animal husbandry is in [...]

Client Review: High Country Velvet Mule Deer Hunting

Idaho high country velvet mule deer hunt. Quest for a 200 inch mule deer.

Mule Deer Hunting

I have been chasing mulies for years, and this hunt is a phenomenal find. It is a first-rate, high-quality experience any way you look at it. I will be going back. I hunted mule deer this past August during an early-season velvet hunt and took a mule deer buck that green scored close to 200 B&C, and I saw but could not get on a buck that would have scored another 15 to 20. That buck was higher, wider and had a 14-inch sword point on one side of his rack. I lost him after an all-morning stalk in the timber. Fifteen minutes later, I spotted the buck I eventually killed. I also saw a third buck that was larger still. In total, I saw 15 bucks in a day and a half. An incredible hunt! [Read the rest...]

Hogs Aren’t Built Like Deer, But Many Hunters Don’t Realize That Many hunters take to the woods each year in pursuit of wild hogs. This is a good thing – it’s nice to stay in practice when it’s not deer season, the meat is nice in the freezer, and wild boars can be a real [...]

Largest Challenge with a Bow

Marc Warnke was on the cover of the Winter 2002 Trophy Hunter Magazine

I know some will disagree but I believe that the largest challenge available to a bow hunter is killing a trophy mule deer. So withstanding nay-sayers claims of successful harvest of fleas, flying mergansers, or whatever else you can come up with, I’ll tell you why I feel a trophy mule deer is the ONE. [...]

Wolf Delisting – We Need Your Help

A Lesson on Mule Deer: Close Counts
