Preparation For Your Upcoming S. Dakota Pheasant Hunt

I’ve put together a little checklist of things you need to bring and/or be aware of if you are going on a pheasant hunt with our outfitter there. We want you to be fully aware of everything you may encounter so you can fully enjoy your experience.

Required equipment:

  • South Dakota Small Game Hunting License. Licence is good for ten days, split into two, five day periods. Dates specified at time of purchase. Purchase Online
  • Shotgun and Shells. (Remember, these are wild, hard flying birds so come prepared.)
  • Blaze Orange (a cap at the very least)
  • Hunting clothing and equipment. Weather is variable, so come prepared.
  • Hunting Vest
  • Broken-in Hunting Boots. (Most walking will be in fairly flat grassland and fields. Easy terrain.)
  • Dogs being brought into South Dakota are required to have a health certificate from their local veterinarian indicating that all shots are up-to-date and they are disease-free animals. Dog owners who have any questions concerning these requirements may call the Animal Industry Board at (605) 773-3321.

If you bring your own dog, we recommend:

  • Dog Crate
  • Leash
  • Electronic dog collar and/or Beeper collar
  • Dog whistles
  • EMT Gel
  • Dog waterer
  • Dog treats
  • FYI – As of 2007, there were no dog kennels yet at the facility, but the plan is to have them set up for the 2008 season.

Other suggested equipment:

  • Pocket knife
  • Hunting Chaps or Upland Pants.
  • Water bottle
  • Sunglasses/shooting glasses
  • Camera
  • Shooting Gloves
  • Many of the local businesses do not accept Credit Cards, so we suggest you have some cash on hand.

Your guide will have:

  • Camera
  • First aid kit in vehicle
  • Water for hunters and dogs
  • Guide will bring a sack lunch to eat in the field.
  • Guide will know the location/directions of closest vet

Additional Information:

  • Located sixty miles West of Aberdeen South Dakota on HIGHWAY 12 and 253.
  • Nearest airport is in Aberdeen South Dakota. Airport pickup and return available for a cost of $100.00.
  • Other airports are in Pierre South Dakota and Bismark North Dakota.
  • Private airstrips also available.li>
  • Recreational Vehicle hookups available.
  • Pheasant limit is three birds per day. Possesion limit is fifteen.
  • Pheasants must have either the head, fully feathered wing or a foot attached while in transportation. All other game birds must have either the head or a fully feathered wing attached. To transport another hunter’s birds, one must get a free transportation permit from a S.D. Conservation Officer, which should be organized well in advance of the hunt. Go to GFP Offices for information on contacting a SD Conservation Officer.
  • Hunting Dogs available. We have several well bred and professionally trained Pointing Labrador Retrievers. If you would like to bring your own dog, we ask that you disclose it’s abilities and training. Our goal is to make the hunt as enjoyable and free of disruption as possible for all of our hunters.
  • South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks Department.

Hopefully this list is helpful. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
Thanks
