At FNAWS (Foundation for North American Wild Sheep) annual convention in Salt Lake City, an anonymous Oregon hunter paid $120,000 for Idaho’s auctioned bighorn sheep permit.
Interestingly, that wasn’t the top auction item:
Idaho’s permit brought the third highest amount of those offered by any western state or province for Rocky Mountain sheep in this year’s auction.
Bidders paid more for permits for Montana and Alberta Rocky Mountain sheep.
As is always the case, sportsmen are picking up the tab for wildlife research through these auction proceeds. Even with all of it’s “proclaimed” flaws, the North American hunting model remains the best wildlife conservation model in the world. Let’s just hope we can keep it that way.
