The sambar deer is a large deer native to the India and Southeast Asia, but have been introduced to both Australia and New Zealand, as well as other parts of the world, such as the United States.
Sambar deer have large, rugged antlers, with simple brow tines and forked beams, so that they have only three tines. The shaggy coat can be anything from yellowish-brown to dark grey in color. Sambar also have a small, dense mane, and their tail is relatively long for deer.
