South Dakota is experiencing historically high pheasant numbers. Brood count surveys by the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department estimated that statewide, this year’s pheasant population was 23 percent higher than last year’s and 18 percent greater than the 2005 pheasant population, which was at a 40-year high.
Nick Cochran, a conservation officer with the S. Dakota Game, Fish & Parks Dept. says: “We haven’t seen numbers like this since 1963.”
