Named mountain caribou herds include the Selkirk, Spatsizi, and Wells Gray. They are found in the Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories (NWT), British Columbia and Alberta.

In the United States, the endangered Selkirk Herd extends marginally into northeastern Washington and northern Idaho.
